Sumter County Provides Information on Camera Use at County Properties

Sumter County uses different types of cameras throughout the county for specific public safety, security, and traffic management purposes.

Security Cameras at County Facilities - Security cameras are used at various Sumter County buildings and properties to help protect residents, employees, and County property.

These cameras record activity at County facilities and include the courthouse and public safety facilities. Recordings may be reviewed when necessary for security, liability, or incident-related purposes. Records associated with these systems are maintained and released in accordance with applicable Florida public records laws and any applicable exemptions.

Traffic Detection Cameras - Cameras and other detection equipment are also used at some traffic signals throughout Sumter County to help manage traffic flow and signal timing.

These devices detect vehicles approaching or waiting at an intersection and provide information used by the traffic signal system to determine when signal phases should change. County staff can also monitor and adjust traffic signal operations remotely when necessary.

These traffic detection cameras are used for traffic signal operations and management. Video from these cameras is not stored or retained by Sumter County.

Flock Safety Cameras - Flock Safety cameras used in Sumter County through a partnership with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office were disabled consistent with direction provided by Governor Ron DeSantis regarding the use of these systems by state agencies. The cameras were mounted on Sheriff’s Office speed trailers and located at certain county parks, where they captured vehicle license plate information.

All Flock Safety cameras mounted on Sheriff’s Office speed trailers are currently warehoused and are not in operation. Flock Safety cameras located on county property, which were limited to designated county parks, have also been disabled and are in the process of being removed. These cameras will be stored in the same warehouse as the Sheriff’s Office speed trailers.
